There are 3 types of drywall panels (based on thickness).

1. 1/2 to 16 inches or less – For framing

This type of drywall is appropriately used for walls. But if you are plastering an old wall the right thickness that you should use is the 3/8 inches.

2. 5/8 to 24 inches – For ceilings

The ceiling panels should always be thicker than the drywall panels used in your wall.

3. 1/2 inch water resistant – for humid areas like bathrooms (while mold resistant drywall panels are used in basements).

In areas where there is a direct and indirect contact with water, you need to use a water resistant panel. Also keep this in mind with the areas where molds are present; you need to use the mold resistant drywall panel.

Drywall panels are available in different sizes and dimensions. Some are 4×8 or 4×12 and if you are closer to main manufacturer, you can find larger sheets for ceiling like 14ft-54ft lengths and 9ft widths. The 4×8 panels weigh 55 lbs while the 4×12 panels weighs 82 lbs.

Installation Steps

1. Make sure that there is proper wood backing in the areas where drywall panels do not have support. Check every corner and ceiling or wall joints.

2. Measure the right length of the needed panels using the T-square. From the whole panel, cut the needed length using a utility knife and cut the panel at the backside. Make sure the edges are properly cut and smooth using a surform tool. Gaps between panels should be less than 1/4 inches.

Note: 4×8 panels can cover 32 sq.ft while the 4×12 panel can cover 48 sq.ft. Order enough of drywall panels to do the whole project if you can. It's okay if you are short a few panels, it is better to make a quick run to add fewer panels than stock extra panels you'll never use.

3. First install the drywall panels in your ceiling before proceeding to the walls. You need an assistant to attach the drywall panels to your walls and ceiling. Use a lift to install 12 ft or larger panels to your ceiling. Hold the panel to the right position and pre-nail the panels. Once the panels are in place, fasten the panels using the drywall screws. Do this process to the entire ceiling.

Attaching panels in the ceiling is easier because they are a flat surface and they do not have many holes to cut out (except for a few light bulb patterns) unlike the walls where you need to cut out patterns for the windows, doors, electrical outlets and others.

In cutting patterns for light bulbs in the ceiling, outlets, doors, windows and little openings you can use the spiral cut-out saw.

4. Once you are done with the ceiling, start cutting the panels for walls, windows and doors using the drywall saw or keyhole saw for small cuts. Use the T-square for straight pattern and cut the drywall panel using the utility knife. Keyhole saws are also used to cut the patterns for electrical outlets and other small cuts.

5. In installing drywall panels to your wall, make sure to push the panel tightly towards the edge of the ceiling before fastening it. Avoid breaking joints at the window and door edges because they will end up cracking which can also be a problem when you start taping.

6. Use drywall screws to fasten the panels to your walls. Longer nails and screws are not advisable because they are more prone to popping. Nails are only for support or secondary hold, so the screws are the major fasteners. That is why putting the drywall screws in place is the last step you need to do after putting all the drywall panels in their positions.

7. Check the protruding screws and nails using a putty knife over each screw and nail head. If you hear a click, then your nail or screw needs to be pushed in further – but do not overdo it as it will damage the drywall panel .

After the long process of installing the drywall panels, the next step you need to do is taping. The reason why you need to properly tack the nails is that they will show and become a huge distraction when you start taping.

For a quick job in taping, especially in the corners, you will be using drywall flusher. It is preferred to use drywall flusher in the corners because they have smooth flat blades to even distribute the mud to the corners. An applicator on the other hand, although they can be used in corners, should be used for even mud distribution in flat surfaces, edges and curved areas.

Know your saw

The best thing you can do when you unbox your chainsaw for the first time is to put it on a bench and then read the manual fully, twice. As you go through the manual look over the saw and make sure you can identify all the components from their description in the manual. Make absolutely certain that you know where all the safety features are and how to use them.

Clear the work area

Make sure you've got several meters of clear space around where you're going to be working. If you've got an electric saw with a cord then check that it will not get snagged on anything sitting between the work area and the power outlet. It's worth walking around the are holding the saw and watching how the cable moves; whilst doing this make sure it is unplugged so you do not start it by accident (pretty illegally, but still worth checking). If you are preparing firewood then you'll want a good sawhorse that will hold your logs steady. If you're cutting down or pruning a tree then think through what your plan is. Make sure you're not going to cut anything that will fall on you. Hold your saw (turned off) how you intend to perform the work and then think about whether you think it is safe. For example, unless you are a qualified professional, you do not want to be up a ladder using a chainsaw. If this is what you intend then considering using a pole saw instead.

Wear safety equipment

Ideally nothing bad will happen, but if you use your saw frequently then at some point you'll lose concentration or something will go wrong with the saw. If you have not considered this and prepared then you're going to end up with a serious injury; but if you have then the risk can be drastically reduced. At a minimum you should be wearing a helmet, gloves, thick clothing and sturdy boots. The helmet should be specifically designed for chainsaw use and will include ear defenders and a face mask to protect you from the noise and flying debris. The gloves should be thick but still allow easy movement – you may need to hit a safety device quickly. As far as the clothing goes consider investing in a pair of chaps, these are made of materials specifically designed to survive an impact from a saw whereas conventional clothing will be useless and instantly cut through (followed by your leg). You'll want work boots with heavy duty steel toe caps to protect your feet.

Getting started

So you've done all your preparation, you know every inch of your saw, the work area is spotless and you're completely decked out in high-quality safety gear from head to toe. After working in the power equipment industry for near a decade I can safely say that most equipment failures are due to fuel contamination. The quality of regular fuel these days is considered poor. With the addition of ethanol, the shelf life of regular fuel is very short. You can typically expect fuel to start breaking down one moth after purchase. If this fuel is sitting in your lawn mower's carburetor and fuel lines over the winter months, it can degrade down to a level where it will plug the tiny passes in the carburetor. At this point the unit will likely have to be taken apart and cleaned. This cost maintenance and hassle can easily be avoided by simple preventative maintenance prior to storage.

The are two options for handing this fuel problem prior to storage. Option 1, and the best option is to remove all the fuel from the unit (fuel tank and carb), option 2 is to add a fuel stabilizer and fill the gas tank, but shutting off the fuel supply to the carb (if the unit has a petcock valve) and then draining the carb bowl is highly recommended.

The easiest thing to do is just run mower dry of gas after the last cut of the year. Some mowers, like Honda's, have a drain screw on the carb bowl that should be opened to ensure all fuel is out. All fuel left in the gas can not be saved and then used in the spring. Stabilizing the fuel in the gas can keep it from breaking down into contaminants, but the quality still degrades. Use it in your car if it's straight gasoline rather than letting it sit all winter.

This is also the time for changing the oil and lubing moving parts and controls. The existing used oil has moisture and contaminants present that can cause corrosion in your engine, so always store with fresh oil. A cylinder fogging oil can be sprayed into the combustion chamber if an extra layer of corrosion protection is wanted, but it's typically not necessary for seasonal storage.

Drilling mud is made by combining dirt and clay with the drilling fluids, which are chemicals. This mixture is pumped into holes to flush out the bit cuttings that are formed as the machinery bores into the various layers of sediment. These fluids can withstand the high pressure while cooling the bit and simultaneously placing a support between the walls of the hole and the casing of the bit.

The types of fluids used are different chemical compounds and lubricants. These fluids are made of strong materials that can provide a bit of friction and excessive lubrication at the same time. It is important that the fluid does not corrode under pressure. The high temperature surrounding the bit can ever ruin it, so it is important that the chemical fluid provides an adequate barrier. If the bit were to be destroyed, all work would have to be stopped until it was changed, so it is important to make it last as long as possible. Having to stop and change the bit wastes time and can halt productivity, which can be costly.

While the mud circulates through the system, still mixed with the chemical fluids, an engineer will measure the composition while drilling to make sure it is still at the desired consistency and that it contains a uniform set of properties. This is called drilling mud testing. During this process, the existing properties can be easily determined by examining the shavings left by the bit, as these shavings will exist if the tool is in need of more lubricant. Bits that are wearing out too soon will leave different types of shavings in the mixture which will be detected during the examination. If the sample indicates that the compound has not stayed consistent within specific parameters, the bit can malfunction. If the bit is determined to be worn out, the solution is to add more fluid or other types of chemicals to balance the composition to protect it.
