Laser level is making life easier for field surveyors and construction professionals. While racing against the clock and budgets, laser level is the proverbial friend in need; helping to cut down surveying effort with the high accuracy, quick reading time, and ease of use.

With advancement in technology, you have a laser for different specific purposes and requirements that come up during building projects, such as groundwork or setting floor joist locations.

Some levels work only indoors and others are useful for both outdoor and indoor work. Optical lasers or models with special detectors help in overcoming interference from light; and so are better for outdoor use.

Choose a laser that is right for the job. Distance-measuring levels, as the name implies give you accurate distances even over long range, say 2KM. For measuring walls and ceilings, line generator, meaning a line laser level, projects cross hair, single line, or both, depending on the model. These levels are ideal for interior work at a single site. Plumb lasers (also called dot laser levels), rotary levels, and pipe lasers are some of the other purpose-oriented instruments.

Durability for a laser level has two aspects; it must last long and then retain the accuracy over the time. Given that these tools are used in unfriendly field conditions, at the least dust, dampness and the sun, it should retain efficiency over its lifetime. You can procure sturdy and accurate self-leveling lasers at online stores, specializing in surveying equipment and field supplies, including sentry safes.

To withstand the rough treatment, choose laser levels encased in seamless assembly and waterproof heads. For double protection, the levels are reinforced with plastic and welded metal exteriors.

The levels are so economic considering how accurately and quickly, you can complete a job. Just for about $ 85, you can buy a 2-point laser that provides ± 1/8-inch tolerance, while plumbing up at 50-ft. An advanced 5-point Plumb, Level and Square layout point projecting level should be available for under $ 400.

Going on to sentry safes, you can choose from advanced models that have one hour proven fire protection, withstand a 30ft drop, and fitted with locks to fight off picking, or drilling. Simpler safes (approximately $ 470), for field use provide two drawers sliding on legal rails, pickproof locks, and fire protection.

At local stores, you spend 10 to 20% needlessly more on laser levels and may be even 50% more on sentry safes. A sentry safe costing around $ 4600 at local store would be available for about $ 2350 from online stores.

Since you can get the same reputed brand with free shipping included, buying surveying and field supplies online makes for better business.

When it comes to organizing your garage some of the largest hurdles involve handling all the big stuff. Organizing anything from your lawn mower to your weed whacker, these things take up tons of space and can really impair your ability to store things around them. Luckily we have some great ideas for you to help make the most of all your space in your garage. Whether it's a 1-car garage or a 3-car garage.

Peg Boards

Pegboards are on the cheapest ways to organize your garage. They are incredibly easy to hang on your wall and they make it easy to organize tools and other small objects into a nice and neat little area.

Pegboard hooks come in hundreds of varieties and they can essentially fit any tool that you want to hang. They even work great for hanging heavier tools because they leverage the pegboard to provide additional support.

Pegboards provide a great way to organize hundreds of tools, everything from screwdrivers to socket sets. They make every tool very accessible without cluttering up a bunch of drawers.

Because the pegboard lays flat against the wall you do not have to worry about bumping next to it in your car. Pegboards are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to whip any garage into shape!

Shelving

We all know shelves are a great for organizing. With proper installation L Frame brackets can supply a great base for making shelves. The additional shelving creates a place to store boxes that you can not fit in your attic and they make it easy to get things up off the ground and make more walking room in your garage.

Recently I've seen a lot of people building shelving around their pegboards to provide a great area to place all of their power tools that come with those fancy hard plastic-carrying cases. This is a great idea for any garage. If you have any special power tools, such as drills, saws, air tools shelves make the perfect place to store those carrying case.

One of the most underutilized areas to place shelving is above the garage doors. If you have a ladder it's a great place that you can create shelving to around the entire perimeter of your garage. This allows even more storage space that is commonly left unused.

Hooks

Rubber coated hook hangers are great ways to store heavy-duty items in your garage. These typically have a thread on the end of the hook that allows you to embed them deeply into the garage wall. This provides great strength and leverage when stosting objects in your garage. A great example of these hooks at work is with bike storage. Bicycles are typically very heavy and take up quite a bit of space. If you can get these things up off the ground and hanging from a hook you can make a ton of room yourself in the garage.

They also come in very handy when hanging ladders. The strength of these hooks can easily hold any 10-foot ladder.

Another reason these rubber coated hooks are so effective is the protection they offer. Most hooks are just plain metal and can scratch your beloveds that you decide to hang on them. With the rubber coating this protects your beloveds that you want to store. These are essential to any garage organization.

There you have it, three essentials for organizing any garage. The use of all of these products will have that garage whipped into shape in no time! When used in combination with each other they are a might organizing force. All it takes is a little creativity and a focused exit and your garage will look like a haven for tools and knick-knacks in no time.

When it comes to staplers do you know which one will be the best for you and what jobs you will need it for? Most people have no idea which stapler is going to be the best and that is something that you need to know more about. I am not saying that there is a bad stapler out there, however, if you want to make sure your stapler does the best job and lasts for a long time, then you have to get the right one.

Before I get into the many different kinds of staplers out there, it is important that you know that some are more than others. A lot of people like to buy desk staplers and they do have their advantages, however, they are not very good when it comes to construction projects and things like that. Something that you will see below is that every stapler has its benefits and that is why you must consider each one.

Types Of Staplers And Their Use

Desk Stapler – A desk stapler is used primarily for stapling pieces of paper together instead of temporarily fastening them with a paper clip. The best part about a desk stapler is that they are cheap, they do not take up much room and they are very easy to use. What most people do not like about a regular desk stapler is that they are very delicate and the littlest things can cause them to jam and fall apart.

Long Reach Stapler – If you need a stapler that can staple book pages together, then this is the stapler you need. The reason I say this is because a long reach stapler gives you the extra clearance under it in order for the papers to get pushed through.

Pneumatic Stapler – The pneumatic stapler is very popular amount builders and anyone that works with wood. The reason is because you can easily staple the pieces of wood together as opposed to nailing them all the time. The best part about a pneumatic stapler is that they use air, so you will not be tired if you are forced to use these for a long time.

Tack Stapler – Have you ever heard of a tack stapler? A tack stapler looks like a long reach stapler, except they work by hiring them onto a piece of wood and that that forced the staple to come out. These are normally used for contractors who need to move quickly and get the staples into wood in order to hold down underlayment or paper under roofing. These are also used to staple work orders on boxes, so there are many uses for these.

Commercial Staple Gun – A commercial stapler gun is very simple, they look similar to that of an actual gun and they have the same squeezing motion. These are normally used for commercial jobs such as laying carpet, roofing and securing wire or underlayment to your home.

Well, there you have it. These are the 5 most used staplers on the market and their uses. If you are in need of a stapler, then it is highly recommended that you start right here and choose the best stapler for you.

Professional Carpet Cleaning – Prolong the Life of Your Carpets

There are many advantages to hiring a professional carpet cleaning company instead of trying to clean the carpets yourself. One of them is that this prolongs the life of the carpets. If you have spent a great deal of money and time on acquiring the floor rugs for your home then you would unduly want to protect your investment. Needless to say, this is only possible if you hire a really good company that knows exactly what to do with carpets.

Carpets tend to get dirty very fast and also in a variety of different ways. Dirt and gravel from the street or the yard is one of the most common reasons for them to become unclean. Similarly, they can also become dirty when food particles spill on them or beverages soak through them. If there are pets or children at home then there is greater chance that the rugs become ingrained with dirt.

When the fibers of the carpet get covered with dust and dirt then there is a chance that the fibers will get cut easily. Dirt and dust particles have an abrasive effect on the fibers when they rub together, such as when a person walks on them. In fact, this is the leading cause of bald patches on a carpet. Food particles have a different effect on carpets. They result in stained areas that look discolored and dirty. As a matter of fact, these food stains also offer bacteria and fungi the opportunity to colonize areas of the carpet. Not only will the carpet smell bad but the affected areas will soon become breeding ground for a variety of mites and insects.

If you were to try and clean your carpets on your own then you will only be able to get dirt out superbically. Of course, you can reduce your dependence on professional cleaners by vacuuming your rugs regularly in order to remove the bulk of the dirt and sand. You should also place a thick and rough door mat at all exits so that most of the dirt is kept out of the house.

All in all, you will be very glad that you have spent money to get carpet cleaning done by professionals. Your rugs will last very long and will also look beautiful all the while. You do need to make sure that you hire a very reliable company to do the job for you.

Sack trolleys are just for commercial or industrial applications. Once you have one, you're sure to find a myriad of uses around your home or property. It's such a simple device, but can be supremely useful. A sack trolley can be two-wheeled or four-wheeled, but the four-wheel model is by far the most useful. Applications for this equipment include moving heavy items around your home or garden, or transporting parts and materials in a factory, warehouse or store. A trolley's design makes it simple, easy and effective to operate, allowing users to transport up to four times their body body effortlessly. Because more items can be stack on a trolley, it's more efficient than the typical hand truck. Also, unlike a hand truck, a four-wheeled trolley does not need to be balanced. It's perfectly stable on its own, thanks to its a stable design.

The Many Variations of a Sack Trolley

If you're limited on storage space, then be sure to consider a folding or a telescopic trolley that can collapse down into one-half of its size. This makes the trolley exceptionally easy to transport, since it will fit comfortably into the boot of a car. It's important to understand that the design of a folding sack trolley is inherently less powerful than a traditional fixed frame model. If your trade or business requires moving items up or down stairs, then it's wise to acquire a stair climbing that even may come in a motorized version for effortless operation. A stair trolley features independent wheels that facilitate climbing stairs. It's also a good idea to choose a trolley with stair skids, which act like skis that glide on the stairs. Such trolleys are ideal for transporting fragile items.

The Modular Designed Sack Trolley

Although manufactured in the US and Germany only, a modular designed sack trolley allows users to customize them for your particular needs. Once you've selected a frame, either curved or straight, steel or aluminum, then add a handle that's right for the way you intend to use the trolley. Beside the frame, the toe plate is an important part of a trolley, so when making your bespoke version, be sure to choose the correct size, again based on your projected usage. This equipment can be further customized with personalization, curve ramps, document pouches, and more.

The Chair Sack Trolley

Some organizations and institutions have an ongoing need to move stacks of chairs, so it's not surprising that there's a purpose-built trolley for moving them. In these models, very often the toe plate is oversized to accommodate the four legs of the bottom chair in the stack that's being moved. Some chair trolleys have flanges on the sides of the toe plate to keep the stack stable. Regardless of the type of trolley you're using, it's typically a good idea to secure the load with straps to prevent the stack tipping and damaging the chairs.

The Bottle and Barrel Moving Sack Trolley

The problem with gas cylinders, such as those found in hospitals, is that they do not come in standard sizes. Thiscoming deve the design of sack trucks that can handle all the various sizes easily and safely. Another specialized type of sack trolley is designed specifically for moving barrels of beer. This has a curved back frame to stabilize the barrel as it's being moved. Also fitted is a moveable hook that also serves to stabilize the load by locking it against the curved back of the frame.

The Versatile Convertible and Heavy-Duty Sack Trolley

If you're on a budget and can not afford to buy several different trolleys for various uses, then consider acquiring a convertible model. This trolley can be configured in either a horizontal or vertical mode. In settings where trolleys receive heavy or hard use, it's wise to invest in heavy-duty models with robust frames and components. The frames on these generally are made from thick, durable angle iron. Their flat, lattice backs make them ideal for moving weighty stacks of boxes or goods. To facilitate moving these, a heavy-duty sack trolley also has an elongated, open toe plate that helps keep the load stable while moving. The open toe plate reduces the trolley's overall weight, making it the ideal choice for use on delivery vans that handle food and wine.

The Aluminum Heavy Duty Sack Trolley

This trolley weighs much less than steel models. It features a lattice back, and may even have a steel toe plate for durability. Such models are designed to accommodate loads of virtually any size, weight and shape. Another feature, rear skids, facilitates moving loads up and down the stairs without bumping or jarring. There are a number of handle styles available, including pistol grip, double, P-handle or U-handle.

Other Types of Sack Trolley

Diamond toe sack trucks, pneumatic barrow sack truck, heavy duty drum truck, mesh back truck and drum dolls are other types of purpose-designed sack trolleys with highly specialized designs. Also available are rough terrain sack trucks designed for use on uneven ground found in places like construction sites and farms. There's even a warehouse platform trolley that has a load rating of 300kg, and is fitted with a strong, solid platform. Both the deck and bumper strip are rubberised. The pull-along handle folds flat for easy storage. Expect to pay about  £ 50.00 for a trolley of this type. It also features 5-inch castors, and is 916mm high, 616mm wide, and 863mm long. It weighs 16kg.

When shopping for a sack trolley, it's important to decide which type and size is best for you before you buy.

If you are the type of person who does work that requires the use of a ladder, or even if you are a home owner who would just like to have access to one around the house for projects, then there is a good chance that you are wondering where the best place to buy a ladder would be. After all, these are not cheap to purchase, especially if you need to buy a larger one or a multi-purpose one. In fact, these can cost you hundreds of dollars if you do not take the time to shop around and know where the best places to go for cheap ladders are.

However, being able to find cheap ladders does not have to be difficult. The first thing you will need to do is to figure out what specific kind you need. You can usually figure this out by thinking about the specific kind of project that you are going to be working on that you need the ladders for. For example, if you are going to be hanging up holiday decorations at your home this season, then you are likely going to need an expandable ladder to have around your home. If you need one just to be able to reach things around your home, then you can go with a smaller “A” frame ladder.

Next, you are going to want to actually do some shopping around to see where you can find great deals on the ladders you are in need of. You may want to start at a website like Amazon, as that tends to be a good place to get the cheapest price. This can result in great savings for you, so it is definitely something to consider.

Another thing to think about is the shipping cost of the ladders, however. Luckily, many online companies offer free shipping when you reach a certain amount of money, so it would be a good idea to look for a seller that has this offer.

Aside from this, another good place to look for cheap ladders would be at a clearance section of a home improvement or home goods store. Often times, you can find good discounts on ladders when a new model or style comes out. Usually, the stores will heavily reduce the price of the older model in order to get rid of their inventory of it, and these results in huge savings for you and being able to get a perfectly good ladder for your needs at a bargain price.

Overall, shopping for cheap ladders is easy enough if you take the time to do your research and know what you are looking for.

Cordless drills are very responsible for making our lives a lot easier. Driving those screws into the walls is definitely not a problem anymore. However, when you are working with your cordless drills for long hours, there comes a time when you receive a warning sign stating that your 'battery is low'.

This is when you need a cordless drill battery charger at hand. Just stick the battery into the charger. Once charged up completely, you are ready to get back to work. Although you must have heard a lot about these chargers, you may probably know too little about them. Read on to know more about the product and things to look out for when buying one.

The Right Charger

Finding a drill battery charger is quite easy, but finding a good one seems to be a bit difficult. A drill battery charger is quite an expensive tool and therefore you need to be very careful while buying one. Most of the present-day cordless drills come with a 24V, 18V, 14.4V, 12V or a 9.6V battery. Drills manufactured by some of the top brands have a battery that can easily last for a decade.

However, the life of the battery greatly depends on the type of charger you own. For instance, cheap chargers are not capable enough to charge the batteries completely and therefore after a certain period, these batteries wear out and so you do not have any other choice but to buy a brand new battery pack.

A good quality charger on the other hand includes a built in sensor that detects the temperature of the battery. If the temperature is too high, the charger delays the charging process and resumes it once the battery cools down completely.

The Cost of a Cordless Drill Battery Charger

The price of the charger depends on its brand and the type. While buying a charger, its quality is something that you need to focus on. No doubt, you may be able to find a charger that costs you not more than just a couple of dollars, but these charges turn useless within a year or two.

Moreover, going for second-hand chargers is also not a good idea, as these old chargers are very responsible for shortening the battery life. At times, due to excessive heat, the plastic coating of the chargers tends to melt. Keeping all of this in mind, your prime motive should be to find the best and the most affordable cordless drill battery charger.

The Right Place to Buy the Chargers

You may buy it either from a traditional electronic store or an online store. Online stores periodically come up with some exciting offers and discounts. Therefore, if you plan to buy the chargers online, you are certainly taking a wise step.

Moreover, in case you receive the wrong product on delivery, these online stores also offer you a replacement. However, you need to do this within a set deadline – probably within 15 days or you may not be eligible for the replacement.

So, one can say that just a small amount of research is what you need to do, and you will certainly be able to find the best cordless drill battery charger at the most reasonable cost without making much effort.

An excavator is an engineering vehicle that is used for digging or refilling of big holes. The basic structure of an excavator compacts the arm, the bucket and tracks. The drive and power source of the excavator is one of the major components of this equipment.

Basically, excavators run on diesel as the main power source since it produces a higher horsepower compared to gasoline. Also, diesel is more suited for heavy duty jobs to power the engine that drives the whole machine. This means that it is responsible for powering the hydraulic arm for digging and lifting mechanism as well as the tracks that are used for its mobility.

The second part of an excavator is the hydraulic mechanical arm that does most of the work. The arm enterprises of two parts joined using a hinge plus a bucket at the end. The arm enterprises of three hydraulic pistons with one attached to the bottom of the first arm part and the second one attached to the top of the other arm part. The third piston is normally used to facilitate the movement of the bucket both forwards and backwards, generating the digging and scooping action.

The third major part of any excavator is the track system that enables it to move forward, backwards as well as turn or spin. The tracks are wound around a system of gears which are in turn connected to a drive shaft powered by the engine. The operator controls the movement of both tracks separately to perform different maneuvers. One track is stopped while the other one is moved either backwards or forward to make a turn.

A control cabin mounted on the tracks is used to houses the operator. The control cabin also houses all the control equipment. This includes the control pedals for moving the tracks as well as the levers used to control the hydraulic arm. The cabin is closed so as to protect the operator from external factors such as rain at the work site. Some customized excavators have a cabin that rotates a full 360 for better control.

The first task to be taken care of when operating an excavator is controlling the dozer blade. First, you have to lower the controls on the left hand into position before putting on the safety belt. The next task is controlling the bulldozer blade by moving it up and down to position the blade securely into the ground for stability. The bucket at the end of the arm is the controlled by use of the joystick to perform different operations such as digging or scooping. Safety should also be highly exercised whenever you operate an excavator to avoid any mishaps.

Demolition saws, also commonly referred to as concrete saws are used for cutting through concrete walls or floors. Due to the nature of the tasks they handle, they require special and regular maintenance. Failure to which reduces their lifespan and effectiveness

A simple regular cleaning exercise of demolition saws after use can go a long way in ensuring that they remain in top notch performance. In most cases, wear and tear is mainly caused by the dirt that accumulates on the saw while on use. You should always grant the saw a good pressure wash after the day's work to remove any of the dust and dirt that might have built up on the blade while in use.

Other than the regular washing exercise, a daily thorough inspection of the saw is highly recommended. You should carefully inspect the blade to ensure that none of the saw jaws are broken or bent. Also, see to it that the blade is firmly attached to the main shaft to avoid any mishaps that may result from a loose saw. This should be done daily before use.

Another useful maintenance for demolition saws is the lubrication of movable parts to ensure a smooth operation. The bearings in the blade shaft of the saw must always be well lubricated to reduce friction while working. This is done while the saw is running at a slow idle speed or immediately after it has been used while it is still hot or a little warm.

You should also perform a daily check on the oil levels of the saw. An oil change is also necessary and mainly depends on the work the saw is involved in. Demolition saws that are typically used for dry cutting require a more frequent oil change than those that are used for wet cutting. This is because with dry cutting, a lot of dust is produced that enters the engine, in the process contaminating the oil.

Another maintenance area of consideration is the tension of the blade shaft belt. This is due to loose belt could lead to an accident while over tightening may damage the saw. It is always advisable to run a new demolition saw on idle before using it so as to readjust the tension of the belt for a smooth for efficient working.

When cutting through concrete, the demolition saw may slip and fall leading to vibration of the blade, which may cause more wear and tear. The slipping may also lead to the falling of the saw because causing damage to the frame. Therefore, special care must always be taken when using the saw to avoid falling.

Finally, to ensure the long life of your demolition saw, you should always take it for regular specialized maintenance and checks. The saw should also not be used on a daily basis to minimize for a longer lifespan because of the tough nature of the job it handles. Failing to carefully maintain your demolition saw would seriously affect its effectiveness and usability.

In road compaction is of great significance as it boost the soil density at the construction site. During the compact process, excess moisture and air are gotten rid of. This as a result minimizes shifting and increases the compacted soil's bearing capacity. Well compacted roads are more stable and less likely to experience seeping, contracting of swelling of water. With minimized water absorption, chances of crumpling of materials used in construction and cracking are minimized.

In road construction, there are four major compact techniques that are employed, each time using different compaction equipment. The techniques in question are; soil vibration, impact, soil kneading and pressure. In each method, there are two main consolidation forces that are used, ie static and vibratory.

The static force procedure is aimed at the upper layers of the soil and includes kneading and pressure. Here, the compaction equipment's dead weight is applied on the soil surface and the force of compaction can be varied through addition and subtraction of weight on the machine. On the other hand, vibration forces are applied using engine-driven compact equipment along the equipment's weight for deeper compaction. During this process, the vibration that moves through the soil particles shakes them together and in the process getting rid of any excess air spaces and water from the soil.

Soil compaction is a process through which the weight for each unit volume of the soil under compaction is increased. Using the drum roller, the upper soil layers can be consolidated due to the massive weight that the roller inserts on the soil. To densely shake the soil particles together, a vibration roller is used. The kneading action can be tackled by the sheep's foot roller.

The moisture content of the soil determines the quality of the soil compaction. Appropriate moisture is essential as it acts as a lubricant, sliding the soil particles together. It is important to maintain a proper moisture balance as a lot of water fills in spaces in the soil, making the soil weaker. On the other hand, too dry soap turns to dust as it defies compaction. The moisture levels vary from one soil type to another and should be appropriately determined.

The nature of the force that is exerted on the soil by the compact equipment is determined by two factors; amplitude and frequency. Frequency refers to the rotational speed of the off-angle axle that necessitates the vibration of the roller while amplitude is the maximum rotation of the vibrating roller in a single direction. Frequency and amplitude vary with the roller's weight and the soil's consistency during consolidation.

Basically, to get the best compact, the use of the best compact equipment is of great significance. At any construction site, some other equipment that is critical beam lift. Observe security precaution at all times when working with heavy engineering equipment of this nature.

Utilizing what Milwaukee claims to be the world's most advanced technologies to innovate this 18v drill / driver, the Milwaukee Fuel 2603-22CT is designed to incorporate the best of both power and ergonomics. Based on the performance of the tool, I'm inclined to believe Milwaukee's filed claim of superiority to be nothing short of the absolute truth. Producing a previously unrivaled degree of power and performance and featuring a comfortable compact body design, the M18 Fuel drill / driver is built for the ultimate over-achiever and ideal for the most demanding professional.

Producing up to 650-in / lbs of torque and weighing-in at a meager 4.4-lbs with its battery, the 2603-22CT is the most powerful drill in its class. This is large due to its redesigned and super-efficient brushless motor. In fact, it's this new motor that both enables the tool to produce greater power and keeps the tool shockingly lightweight. Replacing the traditional carbon brushes and copper conductors with a tiny electronic circuit board, the Milwaukee Fuel motor generates about 25% more torque than comparable 18v drills and about 30% more than Milwaukee's previous model. This modification also renders the motor vastly more efficient allowing the drill / driver 50% more run-time per battery charge and a life-time that's up to 10X longer.

The M18 RedLithium battery also boasts superior technology and functionality. Offering 5X more recharges than leading competitors, the Milwaukee Fuel battery pack is compact and seriously efficient. In fact, the tool can drive more than 500 screws in hex wood per each charge. Milwaukee battery technology (RedLink Plus) offers total system communication with overload protection and the battery itself also displays its remaining run-time on an integrated fuel gauge. The tool also includes 2 M18 compact RedLithium battery packs and a multi-voltage 30-minute charger which allows users to charge both Milwaukee's M18 (18v) M12 (12v) batteries with the same charging unit (and in only 30-minutes).

The 2-speed Fuel drill / driver additionally offers variable speeds ranging from 0-550 RPM and 0-1,850 RPM ensuring you have the ideal amount of power for a variety of different tasks. The tool's contoured soft grip also allows users to operate the tool comfortably during extended or awkward applications and because the drill / driver also features an all metal ratcheting lock chuck, the Fuel delivers maximum gripping power, bit retention and total durability. An LED light is also integrated into the tool for optimal functionality rendering the thing altogether, untouchably awesome.

How to Replace a Miter Saw Blade

A miter saw is one of the most commonly owned and commonly used power tools in the industry. Correspondingly, miter saw blade changes are one of the most common tool maintenance applications. Fortunately, for tool users of all skill levels, changing the blade on a miter saw is easier than you might think. In fact, whether your saw has a blade lock feature or not, changing your miter saw blade requires only a few minutes, a screw driver, an Allen wrench and, in some cases, a hunk of scrap wood.

As with all repair and maintenance procedures, the first step in replacing your miter saw blade is embracing a few safety precautions. Disengage the saw and unplug it; never work on a power tool that has the potential to turn on. You may also throw on your safety glasses because they make everyone look smarter and absolutely stay focused. Handling a blade is always dangerous and particularly so if you're rushed or distracted. So, keep your eyes on the prize.

The next step is bypassing the blade guard. Slide the guard up slightly. This will reveal the screw that holds the guard to the miter saw. Loosen that screw so that you can slide the blade guard further backward. Slide it back as far as it will go positioning it about 170-degrees behind its usual position. This gives you access to the saw's locking pin and blade bolt.

Depress the saw's locking pin (in the very center of the blade) and spin the saw blade until it locks. If your saw does not have a locking pin, wedge your scrap wood (ideally a piece of 2×4) in front of the blade to prevent it from moving. Next, using an Allen wrench (or an open-ended wrench), remove the blade bolt. Although many saws have a reverse threaded blade bolt, the thread pattern is not universal to all miter saws. Correspondingly, you should look for an indicator on the tool of which way to loosen the bolt or review your tool's manual before going to town on it. Remove the flange and finally, remove the blade.

Install the new blade in the same way the former blade was removed. Replace the flange and the blade bolt incorporating the blade bolt is securely tightened.

Slide the blade guard forward and tighten the screw that fastens it to the saw. Replace the guard to its normal working position and, after reengaging the saw and again embracing the safety precautions of miter saw operation, make a few cuts to ensure the saw is in perfect working order.

Lastly, pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

As you can see, replacing the blade on a miter saw is a fairly fast and simple process. Just remember to be careful while doing it. Also keep in mind the necessity of having a sharp, maintained blade: it will enhance both your results and your safety on the job; so, to those who balk at blade changing, do it for the well-being of your projects and for the overall safety of your shop or jobsite.

When Should You Sharpen Your Chainsaw Chain?

Whilst it is all good and well to know how to sharpen your chainsaw chain, one of the more important factors is knowing when you should sharpen it. It's fairly pointless to sharpen the chain well before it needs it, and if you leave it too long you may have to simply replace it. When it comes to sharpening a chainsaw chain, timing is everything.

Using a dull chainsaw poses serious safety rules for yourself and for the people standing nearby. Whilst the chain may be too dull to cut through wood effectively, its blunt teeth will make short work of the soft flesh of your arm or leg. You may also find that using a dull chainsaw tires you out much faster than using a sharp one, simply because you will need to exert more force on the blade as it cuts through the wood. The exertion of more force on a chainsaw is also a danger in itself, as it increases the chances that kickback will occur.

There are a number of signs that will be present when your chainsaw chain is in desperate need of sharpening:

  • How does your chainsaw feel when it is sharp and in perfect working condition? The cuts generally produce rather large chunks of wood that are square-ish in shape. If your chain needs to be sharpened, however, your chainsaw is more likely to produce sawdust.
  • When making a cut in a fallen tree, your chainsaw should go straight through it in a straight line (due to it's self-feeding design; the teeth of the chain pull the blade deer into the wood). If your chain needs to be sharpened, however, your chainsaw will start to pull to either the left or the right, as the teeth can not grip as well.
  • A chainsaw is usually pretty effective at guiding itself through a log; you do not have to use very much force at all. If your chain needs to be sharpened, however, your chainsaw will require much more down force in order to get it to effectively cut through the wood.

When you are next using your chainsaw, look out for any of the above signs – are you producing wood chunks or sawdust; is the blade pulling to one side; do you need to exert more force then normal? All of these are signs that your chainsaw's chain is in desperate need of sharpening. Do not leave it too late, or you may find yourself the recipient of a serious injury.
